Substantial Internet Disruption Impacts Dozens Sites and Applications

A widespread online disruption has affected many websites and applications worldwide, as users reporting issues getting online after problems at the cloud computing system.

The impacted services encompass Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-managed operations including its key e-commerce site and the Ring security device manufacturer.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was affected along with its subsidiaries Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of problems reaching the HMRC online portal on Monday morning. Also in the UK, several Ring users used online platforms to state their doorbells were failing.

Just within Britain, notifications of issues on individual apps totaled the many thousands for every service.

The company stated that the problem began in the eastern region of the United States at the cloud division, a section that offers crucial internet infrastructure for many firms, who utilize resources on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the biggest global web hosting platform.

Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “increased problem frequencies and latencies” for the cloud services in a zone on the eastern US of the US. The ripple effect was seen to hit platforms worldwide, and the Downdetector site showing issues with the same sites in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, additionally noted a surge in problems on Monday morning, with many of them located in the Virginia area, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the issues began.
